U.S. Gasoline Prices Decline

Retail gasoline prices fell to $2.45 per gallon (+8.2% y/y) last week, down for the fifth straight week. Haver Analytics constructs factors adjusting for the seasonal variation in gasoline pump prices. At $2.74 per gallon, the seasonally adjusted gasoline pump price has been fairly steady for five weeks.

WTI crude oil prices have been roughly stable since early-November near $57.00 per barrel, up 10.1% y/y last week. Prices held at $57.16 per barrel yesterday. Brent crude oil prices increased to $64.35 per barrel last week and were $64.45 per barrel yesterday.

Natural gas prices fell last week to $2.72/mmbtu (-23.3% y/y) and were $2.71 yesterday.

In the week ended December 8, gasoline demand rose 1.6% y/y, while total petroleum product demand improved 2.1% y/y. Gasoline inventories fell 1.5% y/y, while inventories of all petroleum products declined 6.2% y/y. Crude oil input to refineries improved 3.7% y/y in the last four weeks.
