Data on Italian retail sales for July and consumer confidence for September were released today.

Retail sales rose 0.56% in July and were 2.66% above the year ago level. The seasonally adjusted index of retail sales has shown a steady upward trend in spite of the precipitous decline that took place in consumer confidence in 2002 and the continued absence of any real improvement in confidence since then.

Consumer confidence rose 1.23% in September from August, but still remains in the doldrums. Confidence was 3.61% below the year ago level. The balance of respondents appraising their overall situation in the last twelve months declined by one percentage point to minus 68.in September. Looking ahead for the next twelve months, the respondents tend to be more optimistic, that is, the balance tends to be less negative or more positive than that for the previous twelve months. Even so, the balance for the next twelve months also declined by one percentage point to minus 22 in September.
