For the month of September, retail sales in China were 397.18 billion Yuan (approximately $49 billion at the current exchange rate). As retail sales are not seasonally adjusted, year to year percent changes are more meaningful than month to month changes.
The year to year change in September was 9.5%, lower than the 9.9% in August, but well above the 4.3% in May which may have represented the greatest impact of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) on the level of retail sales.
Because of the impact of SARS, however, retail sales for the year may fall short of the 10% plus rate of increase of the past two years. Through September, aggregate retail sales averaged 334.5 billion Yuan or 8.6% above the average sales of the comparable period of 2002..
