The Bundesbank reported that industrial production in Germany increased 2.5% from October to November. The consensus estimate was an advance of only 0.6%.
While the month to month increase was surprising, a more realistic picture emerges when one takes a three month average of the data that tends to smooth the short term fluctuations. On this basis the recent increase was 0.2%.
The trend of the three month moving average appears to have bottomed in early 2002 and is now rising.
Recent data on new orders and exports suggest further support for industrial production.
